On a Pension or Benefits?
Borrowing on Fixed Income in Vernon
Government pension and benefit income counts for most licensed lenders, as long as it's deposited to your own bank account. What's different is the timing. With one deposit a month, a payday loan comes out of the same cheque that pays your rent, groceries and medications, so the repayment hits harder than it would for someone paid weekly.
A good rule of thumb: if repaying the loan would leave you short again before the next deposit, the loan is likely to turn into a second loan. That's the cycle BC's rules try to prevent, and it's why lenders won't give you a new loan to pay off an old one.
If a single large expense is the problem, ask whether it can be paid in instalments. If debts are building up, the Credit Counselling Society offers free, confidential help across BC at 1-888-527-8999.
