Borrowing in Beaumont, AB

A Fast-Growing City With Real Budget Pressures

Beaumont has changed a lot in a short time. The old francophone farming settlement on the hill south of Edmonton became Alberta's newest city on January 1, 2019, and it is still one of the fastest-growing communities in the province. The 2021 census counted 20,888 residents, almost 20% more than five years earlier, and provincial estimates now put the population above 26,000.

Most of that growth is young families buying newer homes in areas like Montalet, Triomphe Estates, Élan and Azur. Plenty of households here are carrying a fresh mortgage, childcare and two vehicles, and many people commute to work in south Edmonton, at the Nisku industrial area or at Edmonton International Airport. When one paycheque is late, a shift rotation gets cut or the furnace quits in January, there is often not much room in the budget.

That is the gap a payday loan is designed for: a small, one-time shortfall you can clearly repay within the next couple of months. It is not a fix for ongoing money trouble, and we would rather tell you that up front.

Plain-Language Pricing

What a Payday Loan Costs in Beaumont

Since January 1, 2025, the most any payday lender in Alberta can charge is $14 for every $100 you borrow. That single figure has to cover all interest and fees for the loan.

Maximum costs at Alberta's $14 per $100 cap. Extra charges apply only if a payment is missed or returned.
You borrowMaximum costMaximum total to repay
$200$28$228
$300$42$342
$500$70$570
$800$112$912
$1,000$140$1,140
$1,500$210$1,710

Understanding the Annual Rate

A $14 charge sounds small, but it applies over a short period. On a 42-day term it works out to an annual percentage rate of roughly 122%; stretched to the full 62 days, it is closer to 82%. For comparison, a typical credit card is around 20%. Your loan agreement must show the exact APR before you sign.

That is why we suggest borrowing only the amount you truly need. Taking $300 instead of $500 saves you $28, and a smaller amount is easier to fit into your instalments.

Worked example: You borrow $400 in Beaumont on a 42-day term and are paid every two weeks. The maximum cost is $56, so you repay no more than $456 in total, split across your pay dates as set out in your agreement.

Alberta Payday Loan Rules That Protect Beaumont Borrowers

Payday lending in Alberta is governed by the Consumer Protection Act and the Payday Loans Regulation. They apply to every lender serving Alberta residents, whether it has a storefront or operates online.

Why Alberta's Rules Are Different

In many provinces a payday loan is due in one lump sum on your next payday. Alberta changed that with An Act to End Predatory Lending, which took full effect in 2016. Loans here must run at least 42 days and be repaid in instalments, so the balance is spread over several paycheques instead of wiping out one.

A lender also cannot roll your loan over, meaning it cannot extend or replace an unpaid loan with a new one to generate more fees. And if you have second thoughts after signing, you can cancel within two business days by returning the money, at no cost.

You can confirm any lender holds a valid Alberta Payday Loan licence using the Government of Alberta's licence lookup. Questions or complaints go to the Consumer Contact Centre at 1-877-427-4088 (toll-free in Alberta).

Who Can Apply

Payday Loan Requirements in Beaumont

The basics are straightforward. Final approval and the amount offered are always up to the lender.

  • You live in Beaumont or elsewhere in Alberta and are at least 18 years old
  • You have regular income, typically at least $1,000 a month. Employment, EI, CPP, pension, AISH and steady self-employment income can all count
  • You have an active Canadian chequing account that can receive Interac e-Transfers and deposits
  • You have a working phone number and email address
  • You do not currently owe the same lender on another payday loan

Before you accept: Look at each instalment date on your agreement and check it against your pay dates and other bills, especially your mortgage or rent. If a payment would leave you short, ask for a smaller amount.

Borrow Smart

Worth Checking Before You Borrow

A payday loan is sometimes the quickest answer, but not always the cheapest. A few minutes on these options could save you money.

Ask About a Pay Advance

Some employers, especially larger ones, will advance part of wages you have already earned at little or no cost. It never hurts to ask payroll.

Call the Bill Issuer

Utility providers, landlords and lenders will often agree to a short payment arrangement if you call before a bill is overdue.

Free, confidential help is available from Alberta's Money Mentors and from the Credit Counselling Society at 1-888-527-8999 if debts are piling up.

The online form takes about five minutes. Many applicants get a decision within minutes, and once you sign the agreement, lenders usually send the Interac e-Transfer within about 15 minutes, including evenings and weekends. Your bank's own processing can occasionally add time.
No. Payday lenders mainly look at your current income and recent bank account activity rather than your credit score, so past credit problems do not automatically rule you out. Approval is never guaranteed, because every lender must be satisfied you can repay.
Alberta requires payday loans to be repaid in instalments over a term of 42 to 62 days, rather than in one lump sum on your next payday. Your agreement shows each payment date and amount.
Yes. Alberta's Consumer Protection Act gives you two business days after signing to cancel. You return the money you borrowed and pay no fee for cancelling.
