Link Byfield registered as a candidate in Senate election

Edmonton - Link Byfield today was registered by Alberta's electoral office as a candidate for Senator-elect in the November 22 provincial election.
He was one of 10 candidates to make today's deadline.

Byfield submitted more than his required 1,500 signatures of endorsement. Aided by a province-wide network of volunteers, the former magazine publisher delivered over 1,700 signatures.

Senate Campaign underway

Edmonton - The campaign for senators-in-waiting has begun, with Premier Ralph Klein announcing that three positions will be filled when Albertans go to the polls at the end of November.

Half the province's Senate seats are empty, and Klein says the winners of the race will be nominated to fill those vacancies, part of the province's commitment to a Triple E Senate.

ST. ALBERT - Alberta's right-wing iconoclast Link Byfield has tossed his hat into the province's race to be the next senator-elect.

Well known for his work publishing the Alberta Report, later titled simply The Report, the Sturgeon County resident has continued to be an active and outspoken advocate of federal government decentralization. He is also a proponent of the 'Alberta Agenda' policies advocated by federal Conservative leader Stephen Harper and former senator-in-waiting Ted Morton.

Senatorial nominee campaign begins

Edmonton - The Alberta government issued a writ today for the Senate nominee election, opening the nomination process for candidates in that election. Prospective candidates in the Senate nominee election can now begin meeting the nomination requirements as laid out in Alberta's Senatorial Selection Act.

"Alberta continues to be the prime advocate of Senate reform in Canada," said Premier Ralph Klein. "I again call upon the Prime Minister to pay attention to the wishes of Albertans and provide the Senate with a democratic foundation by appointing duly elected Senate nominees to fill Alberta's vacant Senate seats."

Hands off our oil money, Klein warns Ottawa

EDMONTON — With skyrocketing oil prices flooding Alberta's treasury with billions of unexpected dollars, Premier Ralph Klein issued a stern warning to Ottawa today to keep its mitts off the dough.

Klein said his government is assessing whether to build political firewalls to keep the federal government away from matters of provincial jurisdiction.

"We built this province. We have the constitutional authority to protect and to run our resources and reap the profits and the rewards of those resources," Klein thundered during a luncheon speech to the Edmonton Petroleum Club...

...Link Byfield, who is running as an independent in Alberta's senator-in-waiting election, said it is Alberta's responsibility to pass its wealth on to its future generations — not to Ottawa....

Byfield will try for Alberta senate seat

The former publisher of the Alberta Report wants to be a senator and will run as an independent in the November election.

"I think it's very important for Albertans to start focusing on exercising their full range of rights and responsibilities under the constitution," Link Byfield said. "We should be taking far more control of things. We allow the federal government to do that. We don't have to. Theconstitution lets us do them."

Link Byfield declares Senate candidacy

Edmonton - Veteran Edmonton journalist and former magazine publisher Link Byfield announced today he will be running in the race for Alberta "senator-elect" in the next provincial election, expected in late November.

"Alberta is heading into another decade of crisis like the 1970s," said Byfield. "Resource revenues are high, and Albertans need a strong, clear voice defending their constitutional rights."
